The Fifth Day of Christmas Anime: Usagi Drop
Episode 3.5: “To Santa Claus”
With Christmas time approaching, Daikichi asks Rin what she wants Santa to bring her this Christmas. She responds that she wants another “Lob Ear,” a stuffed bunny, to be a friend to her current one. Daikichi later purchases the gift, along with a small Christmas tree for the two to put up in their home. For Christmas Eve, Rin arranges cookies and a carrot (for the reindeer) and the next morning, Rin happily eats with her new Lob Ear alongside her other one.
Coming in at only about five and a half minutes, this special addition to the Usagi Drop anime is short and sweet. The sweetness should come as no surprise to anyone who’s watched the show, which is always, always lovely.
Usagi Drop really connected with me as a father and this short episode more than most. In Rin, I saw the innocence and humor of a young child in her actions – her coloring of the picture for Santa reminded me of my own son’s obsession with crayons and Rin’s carrot for the reindeer was appropriately thoughtful and out of left field. In a season that is largely focused on family, what better to watch than a show that’s all about a wonderful, makeshift family.

If This Episode Was a Christmas Song, It Would Be…
“Merry Christmas” – This Third Day song is likely one you’ve never heard, but I thought it appropriate. Instead of celebrating the joyful tone of the special, though, it points at the bigger aspect of the series – loving children who are unwanted:
As I hang the tinsel on the tree and watch the twinkling lights
I’m warmed by the fire’s glow
Outside the children tumble in a wonderland of white,
Make angels in the snow
But half a world away you try your best to fight the tears
And hope that heaven’s angels come to carry you here
It’s Christmas time again but you’re not home
Your family is here and yet you’re somewhere else alone
And so tonight I pray that God will come and hold you in his arms
And tell you from my heart I wish you Merry Christmas
Brrr! It’s been so chilly! Tomorrow’s no exception. It would be great if someone, like my beautiful landlord, would knit a scarf for me…
